Parkinson’s Disease – How We Can Help
Parkinson’s Disease is said to affect 1 in every 100 people above the age of 60 and is the second most common neurological disease in Australia. Over the last 25 years, the number of people with Parkinson’s Disease has doubled.
What is Parkinson’s Disease?
Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease, where there is death of dopaminergic cells within an area of the brain, called the Substantia Nigra.
As a result, there is a reduction in dopamine within the brain, which interacts with other areas of the brain such as the Basal Ganglia and Brain Stem, that are involved in the execution of movement, fine turning movements, motor control, and muscle tone, among many other roles.
There are also other symptoms that arise in Parkinson’s disease such as sleep disorders, psychological and psychotic disturbances, bladder and bowel difficulties, cognitive decline, sensory changes, and increased fatigue and pain.
What Does The Research Say?
Research strongly indicates that exercise is one of the most effective forms, alongside pharmacological intervention, to improve both motor and non-motor symptoms related to Parkinson’s disease.
Studies show that aerobic and resistance-based exercise can slow the rate of disease progression, and stabilize motor symptoms, improve sleep, fatigue, pain, and improve mood and overall quality of life.
